UK - China Trade & Investment Statistics: January- July 2009 Progress by the end of July 2009 on the headline targets to be achieved by 2010: · UK-China bilateral trade in goods reached US$20.16bn against the target of $60bn trade in goods and services by the year 2010. · 56 Chinese companies are now listed on the London Stock Exchange (6 on the main board and 50 on AIM against the target of 100 by 2010). Trade in Goods Highlights Year to date (July) · Bilateral trade between UK and China is $20.16 billion, down 21%. · *UK exports to China down 27.4% to US$4.19 billion (Mofcom); According to HM Revenue and Customs, exports were £2.71 billion, down by 7.3%. · *UK importsfrom China down 19% to US$15.97 billion (Mofcom); or up by 9% to £12.22 billion according to HM Revenue and Customs. · China’s total trade in goods down 22.7% to US$1146.71 billion from Jan to July 2009. · China’s overall trade surplus down 13.1% to US$107.48 billion for from Jan to July 2009. * Discrepancies between Chinese and UK statistics reflect exchange rate fluctuations and differences in method of recording statistics. China’s total trade in goods for 2008 was US$2,562bn (up 17%), imports US$1,133bn (up 19%) and exports US$1,429bn (up 17%). The overall trade surplus reached US$295bn (up 13%). In 2008, UK-China trade in goods was US$45.62 billion, up 15.7% compared with 2007. China exports of goods to UK for 2008 were US$36.07 billion, up by 13.9%, and China imports of goods from UK were US$9.55 billion, up by 22.9%. (source: Mofcom) According to the data from HM Revenue and Customs, in 2008 China exports of goods to UK were £23.107 billion, an increase of 23% over 2007 figures. China imports were £5.072 billion of goods, an increase of 31% over 2007 figures. Trade in goods between UK and China for the first seven months of 2009 was US$20.16 billion. UK export value to China reached US$4.19 billion (down 27.4%). The UK’s main exports to China by sector are metalliferous ores and metal scrap, power generating machinery and equipment, general industrial machinery, road vehicles, medical & pharmaceutical products, electrical machinery and appliances. UK imported goods valued at US$15.97 billion (down 19.3%) from China, consisting mainly of clothing, miscellaneous manufactured articles, office machines, telecom equipment, electrical machinery and furniture etc. 
Source: HM Revenue & Customs China is the UK’s 9th largest market for export of goods (cf Japan 15th, India 17th) whereas China is the UK’s 3rd largest source of import of goods. Trade through Hong Kong From Jan to July 2009, UK re-exports to China via Hong Kong were £292 million, down 43% compared with the same period 2008. The UK re-imports from China via Hong Kong were £2.33 billion, down by 20%. Trade in Services (ONS for all figures) Highlights Year to Date (July) · UK exports of services to China increased 60% in 2008. · UK imports of services from China increased 29% in 2008. · Exports of insurance and financial services increased by 24% in 2008. In 2008, UK exports of services to China increased by 60% to £2.471 billion compared with £1.55bn in 2007. UK imports of services from China rose 29% to £1.272 billion compared to £983m in 2007. Foreign Direct Investment in China(Source Chinese Customs/MOFCOM) Highlights Year to Date (July) · Cumulatively, the UK’s total realised investment value to China was US$16.68 billion as at the end of July 2009. · The realised FDI value of UK investment decreased by 21% for the first seven month of year 2009. UK’s investment to China from Jan to July 2009 is US$382 million with 144 projects. Cumulatively, UK is the No. 1 EU investor in China, with a total realised investment value of US$16.68 billion and 6343 projects at the end of July 2009. Chinese Investment in UK (Source UKTI) · 6 Chinese companies are listed on the London Stock Exchange main board and 50 on AIM. · According to Mofcom the UK is the No. 1 destination for Chinese investment into EU.
